An opening meeting of Legal Advisory Council in 2018 was held in London

A regular meeting of the AIFC Legal Advisory Council was held on 16 February at 3 Verulam Buildings Chambers in London.

Introductory remarks were given by Kairat Kelimbetov, Governor of the AIFC, and Mr Michael Blair QC, Chairman of the Legal Advisory Council and Leading Counsel of 3 Verulam Buildings.

The Chairman, members of the Legal Advisory Council and other participants of the meeting welcomed a new member of the Council, Mr Andrew Roberts. "I am pleased to welcome Andrew to the Legal Advisory Council as a member. His stellar experience in capital markets provides additional advantages to the Council both in London and globally" says the Chairman of the Council, Mr Michael Blair QC.

Andrew is a partner at Herbert Smith Freehills in London and the firm’s global head of debt capital markets. His expertise in debt capital markets is highlighted by listings in Chambers UK as a leading individual, which describe him as ‘very calm in a crisis’ and ‘very experienced and practical’. Legal 500 UK also lists Andrew as a leading individual, noting his ‘great experience and technical expertise’.

Andrew works with issuers and underwriters on offerings of a wide range of debt and equity-linked securities. With substantial international experience, he has helped clients on capital markets transactions in most major financial centres and many emerging markets. He also specialises in Islamic finance.

Legal Advisory Council under AIFC. The Council was established in the form of an advisory body to AIFC in 2017. The tasks of the Council include consideration and examination of draft acts of AIFC, conducting other advisory work. In addition, the activities of the Council will facilitate the implementation and application in AIFC of the principles, norms and precedents of law of England and Wales, as well as the formation of a legal framework in accordance with the standards of the world's leading financial centres.
