Visit of Lord Harry Woolf

Lord Harry Woolf former Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, a mediator and arbitrator of Blackstone Chambers, first President of the Qatar Financial Centre Civil and Commercial Court, member of the Joint Committee on Human Rights and Vice-Chairman of All Party Parliamentary Group by invitation of Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC) has visited Kazakhstan 

Today, on September 2, 2016 Lord Harry Woolf former Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, a mediator and arbitrator of Blackstone Chambers, first President of the Qatar Financial Centre Civil and Commercial Court, member of the Joint Committee on Human Rights and Vice-Chairman of All Party Parliamentary Group invited by Astana International Financial Centre has visited Kazakhstan.

In Astana Lord Harry Woolf has met Prime-minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Karim Massimov. During this meeting Prime-minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Massimov Karim discussed with Lord Harry Woolf his involvement in establishment and operation of the AIFC Courts and International Arbitration Centre.

Also, Lord Harry Woolf has had a meeting with the Chairman of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kairat Mami. During this meeting the Chairman of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kairat Mami and Lord Harry Woolf shared their views on future mutual cooperation between national courts of Kazakhstan and AIFC Courts, training of the Supreme Court`s judges in the UK.

Lord Harry Woolf has visited Minister of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan Berik Imashev. In this meeting Minister of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan Berik Imashev and Lord Harry Woolf shared their views on enforcement of national courts decisions, AIFC Courts` acts and arbitration awards`. Lord Harry Woolf shared his experience of being first President of the Qatar Financial Centre Civil and Commercial Court.

Lord Harry Woolf has met Prosecutor General of the Republic of Kazakhstan Zhakyp Assanov. Participants of the meeting discussed issues of a bilateral cooperation, including interaction with the leading international lawyers and development of partnerships in the field of legal proceedings and reforming of arbitration activities.

The parties exchanged views on the possibility of participation of Lord Woolf in the establishment of AIFC Courts and the International arbitration center and also involvement of experienced English judges and arbitrators for implementation of justice within AIFC.

Also, both shared their experience, kazakh and british practice on participation of the public prosecutors in civil and criminal procedures.

AIFC. In December 2015 President of the Republic of Kazakhstan NursultanNazarbayev signed the Constitutional law “On the Astana International Financial Centre” (AIFC). The aim of the AIFC is to form a leading international centre of financial services. For the first time in post-Soviet region Common law framework will be introduced in the AIFC. English shall be the official language of the AIFC.

 The objectives of the AIFC are to attract investment into the economy through the establishment of an attractive environment for investment in the financial services, develop local capital markets, ensuring their integration with the international capital markets, and develop markets for insurance and banking services and for Islamic financing in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
