The UN Mission in Kyrgyzstan supports the creation of a subsidiary of the AIFC Green Finance Centre – “GFC BISHKEK”

Within the framework of the visit of the delegation of the UN Mission in Kyrgyz Republic to the Astana International Financial Centre (hereinafter – AIFC), the CEO of the AIFC Green Finance Centre (hereinafter – GFC) Kazybayev A.K. held a meeting with the Resident Coordinator of the UN system in Kyrgyz Republic Mr. Ozonnia Ojielo.

During the meeting, Aidar Kazybayev familiarized the delegation of the Kyrgyz Office of the UN with the activities of the Green Finance Centre and presented the opening of a subsidiary of the GFC in Kyrgyz Republic – “GFC BISHKEK”.

The activities of “GFC Bishkek” will be aimed at supporting the issuance of sustainable (green, social, sustainability-related and ESG) bonds and loans; providing advisory support to government agencies and companies of the Kyrgyz Republic on the development of the sustainable financing market, including the introduction of ESG principles and the preparation of non-financial reporting of companies; training specialists in the field of sustainable financing, provision of investment attraction services, as well as promotion of other instruments and services of the Astana International Financial Centre.

The members of the delegation supported the creation of “GFC BISHKEK” and spoke in favor of strengthening cooperation through the development of a sustainable capital market in the region, including the issuance of green and social bonds to support agriculture, the food market in Kyrgyzstan, as well as social and gender equality.

The CEO of the Green Finance Centre put forward a proposal to the UN to subsidize the coupon rate of the debut issue of the green bond of the Kyrgyz issuer. Following the meeting, an agreement was reached on the development of a joint roadmap for cooperation between the GFC and the UN in Kyrgyz Republic.

The AIFC Green Finance Centre is a subsidiary organisation of the AIFC Authority and the Eurasian Development Bank, aimed at introduction and development of sustainable finance instruments and attracting of investments in environmental and social projects in Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

The AIFC Green Finance Centre supported the very first issuance of green bonds and first verified green loan in Kazakhstan. Also, the Centre introduced definitions of green finance and green taxonomy (a classifier of economic activities and projects that meet technical selection criteria) in the national environmental legislation. The new legislation provides incentives for entrepreneurs who use green finance instruments.
