Astana International Financial Centre Joins Global Privacy Assembly
On 12 November 2024, the Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC) became a member of the Global Privacy Assembly (GPA), an international, non-governmental organisation aimed at uniting regulators to strengthen personal data protection and promote best practices in data governance. Kazakhstan is the first Central Asian jurisdiction to join the Assembly.
One of the key objectives of the GPA is to enhance the enforcement capabilities of regulatory authorities. As a member of the Assembly, the AIFC will have access to the expertise and best practices of other jurisdictions, allowing it to further develop its legal framework for data protection.
For the financial centre, the benefits of joining the Assembly include support on privacy enforcement matters, as well as participation in a platform for cooperation and information exchange with other jurisdictions.
Daniyar Kelbetov, Chief Product Officer at AIFC Authority, commented: “Joining the GPA enhances the credibility and attractiveness of our financial centre as a jurisdiction, as it allows us to learn from international experience and implement cutting-edge practices. This demonstrates our commitment to upholding global privacy standards and advancing the right to privacy.”
It is worth noting that the Global Privacy Assembly is an international non-governmental organisation established in 1979, with its Secretariat located in Mexico City, Mexico. The GPA aims to strengthen the enforcement capabilities of regulators to ensure higher levels of global data protection and privacy.
